The proposed sculpture condenses the form of a fish connecting it to similar marine forms: sail, surfboard, boat, etc. The simple elegant shape has a welcoming quality to it that resonates with the concept of a gateway to the region. Likewise the marine references connect the site to Kananook Creek that flows out to the Frankston shoreline nearby.

Harlequinfish is designed to be viewed from multiple angles in such a way that the shape is dynamic, especially when viewed from a passing car. During the day, the hollowed out form interacts with the surroundings and the simple curved surface reflects the ambient light of the space making it responsive to changes in lighting conditions at different times of day and different weather conditions.

Holes in the form articulate an eye and ribs. They also provide light wells that disperse daytime light. At night they are illuminated by computer controlled LEDs that are mounted in each hole. Lighting can be constantly varied using computer algorithms that make sophisticated colour combinations that result in richly varied lighting hues. Also lighting sequences can be animated into rhythmic moving patterns. The animated lighting will be a major attraction for the work giving it ongoing interest without it being obtrusive or gaudy. Note that the artist is known for his work on generative computer processes and will be writing control software specifically for the sculpture.

The fabrication will be contracted to Sculpture Co https://www.sculptureco.net/ who will advise on materials and structural features. However at a basic level the structural support would probably be an internal steel skeleton that is clad with sheet steel. Particular attention will be paid to the use of sustainable materials.

Harlequinfish

Note that “Harlequin Fish” also known as “Chinese Lantern” is a fish that once inhabited Port Phillip Bay (its range is currently South Australia and Western Australia). Harlequin fish vary greatly in colour, but commonly feature contrasting spots of vibrant colour. The reference to this fish may stimulate conversation about conservation issues related to Port Phillip bay.
